BEST BUTCHERIES ANNOUNCED

Record number of Cleaver Award nominations received

Johannesburg, Wednesday 13th April 2011:The country’s top butchers are certainly worth their beef. The best butcheries both nationally and regionally were announced at a luncheon today attended by senior members of the meat production and retail industry, awardfinalists, judges and media.

This year saw six national and 40 provincial butcheries winning Platinum or Gold Cleaver Awards. Between October and December 2010, 17 600 public nominations were received via sms – a new record for these awards. Of these, 145 finalists were individually and anonymously assessed against a 212 point checklist.

Since these awards started six year ago, butchery standards have significantly improved and feedback from consumers show that the majority perceive the Cleaver Awards to be a seal of approval. An initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum,  these Awards acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller marked South African Beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money.

“The number of finalists has grown from 45 in 2008, 95 in 2009 to 145 for 2010. Similarly, the number of nominations has also grown exponentially from about XXX when we first started these awards in 2005 to 17 600 last year.

Our adjudicators have a demanding task as the standards have become higher and higher each year. These Awards motivate management, personnel, customers, suppliers and competitors alike. We are so pleased that these Awards have been so well supported and continue to benefit the industry year after year”, says Dave Ford, Chairperson for the South African Red Meat Industry Forum.
