Introduction to RMRD SA

The RMRD SA or  Red Meat Research and Development South Africa receives applications for funding for research projects relevant to the red meat industry. Projects are considered on merit, all applications are dealt with on a fair basis based on relevance to prioritised focus areas.

Over the years many and varied projects have been financed which are of great value to the industry. If you are interested in current research projects or recent research or literature studies then go to the Projects section for a list of the recent projects or otherwise refer to the Projects history for reports, popular and scientific articles and more listed for each project.

All the information about the process, the forms and guidelines on completing the application for Funding are available on the website under the Funding section How the selection and approval process works is described in the same section on the RMRD SA website.

Research proposals and protocols are evaluated and prioritized, according to Research Focus Areas  , by either of the two planning committees:

  • Red Meat Research and Development South Africa Cattle and Small Stock (RMRD SA CSS)
  • Red Meat Research and Development South Africa Pigs (RMRD SA Pigs)

The RMRD SA planning committees in turn recommend projects for funding to the Project Committee who gives the final go-ahead for funding. The process of approval may take up to 6 months if all runs smoothly. In some cases this may take longer depending on whether changes are requested to the proposal.

The committees are compiled from representatives of the relevant industries and from researchers nominated from recognized research institutions and universities. Supporting the Cattle and Small Stock Planning committee are Subject Working Groups, one for each Research Focus Area. Such a group is made up of specialists in their own respective field of expertise.
