SAFLA
South African Federation of Livestock Agents
Introduction
SAFLA is a federation for livestock auctioneers (LMA) constituted in terms of its constitution subscribed to by all major auctioneers in RSA as well as a number of SME’s.
The federation is represented by members from 9 regions and its board consists of one member per region, elected democratically annually.
SAFLA is the mouthpiece for the livestock auction industry and represents this constituency on Government and red meat industry structures.
SAFLA members are regulated by law. All LMA’s in South Africa must register with the Agricultural Produce Agents Council (APAC) in terms of the Agricultural Produce Agency Act. (Act 12 of 1992.)
Members of the above council are appointed by the Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs. The purpose of the council is to regulate 3 categories of agricultural produce agents. i.e. Fresh Produce Agents, Livestock Agents and Export Agents.
It is a common course that one of the major challenges for South Africa’s farmers is market access. LMA’s are in the forefront in terms of information regarding market access (i.e. market places, prices etc.) Timelines and accurate market information is provided.
SAFLA urges its members to become involved in helping and training the emerging farmers on various aspects of livestock farming as well as marketing. Joint ventures are being undertaken with other role players in the Red Meat Industry.
